Searching within objects

In the previous lessons you’ve learned how to set up and use views. You may have noticed that at the top of each view is a magnifying glass. This search icon is provided to help you find specific records in each object. By clicking it, you’ll open a search bar where you can search for any record in the current object.

The search option will search through all the records in the current object, and not just the records in the current view. For example, if you’re open to the lead view, which only shows lead accounts, you can search for an account which is not in the lead status. Any accounts which match the search criteria, no matter what status they’re set to, will be included in the results.

A few important notes about the search option:

  • Each search must include at least two characters.
  • Searches will look for an exact match to the beginning of each word in a field. For example, the value “San Francisco” in the city field will not match if you search for “cisco” but will match if you search for “Fran”. If you’d like to search for values in the middle of a word you can use %, so that searching for “%cisco” will match the “San Francisco” field.
  • Each search will look for values which match within most of the system fields, such as names, phone numbers, email addresses, and more. In this way if “99” appears in either a phone number or an email, the record will be displayed in the “99” search results.
  • Search results will not come up for the values within any of the following field types: Number, Picklist, HTML, Date, Date & Time, Formula, and Summary. If you’d like to search for specific values in fields belonging to any of these types, you can instead use the temporary filter option you learned about in the previous lesson.
  • The view which displays the results will be the default view, which you’ll learn about in one of the next lessons.

Find any record you're looking for by using the object search option. Follow specific guidelines to sharpen your search skills.
